President's Challenge 2018 - 2019
It’s a UFO Challenge! The main goal of the challenge will be to finish 4 UFOs while having some fun at the same time. As an added bonus, there will be a draw for sewing/quilting prizes in June 2019. To keep it fun, I will ask you to list up to 8 UFOs … which means you won’t know for sure which four projects you’ll be asked to finish over the next guild year!
Here’s how it works: Challenge forms will be available at the September meeting or online at the Guild website. They will include instructions, a project list sheet and 4 blank draw tickets to complete and hand in as you share each completed UFO.
* Participants will identify and list up to 8 UFOs, then hand it in. It is suggested you keep a copy.
* Every two months a number from 1-8 will be drawn. The number drawn will be the UFO project for you to work on over the following two months.
* Completed UFOs and filled in draw tickets are to be brought to the general meetings by the month they are due. They will be presented at that month’s Sew and Share.
* Each UFO will have two months to be completed to be eligible to be in the June prize draw.
Since this is for fun, the only criteria for eligible UFOs are as follows:
1) they need to have been started already and
2) they require 1 hour or more of your time to complete. New projects or projects that need less of 1 hour of your time to complete are ineligible.
… SO four completed UFOs means 4 chances to win!

THE "STITCHES THROUGH TIME" SCHOOL PROJECT
See the file at the bottom of this page for a more detailed description of the initial year of the "Stitches Through Time" Project.
"Stitches Through Time” was a collaboration between elementary students in the Halton Region and the Halton Quilters Guild in 2016 - 2017. The project was a proposal by guild member, Katherine Hunter, as a way to link the celebration of Canada's 150 birthday with the 40th Anniversary of the guild. The quilts made by the students were then featured as the special exhibit at our 2017 Quilt Show, "Stiches in Our Time".
In September 2016 Katherine visited the interested schools to discuss the history of quilting as well as its importance in the community and as an art form. She then organized a small team of volunteers to work with students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 at Halton schools in Acton, Burlington, Georgetown, Milton and Oakville. The students learned to use a sewing machine, as they sewed a practice strip of material, made a coaster to take home and created a block for their class quilt. Many volunteers from the guild helped with this amazing project - contributing fabric, working with the students in the classroom, assembling the quilt tops, long arm quilting them and then attaching the binding. At the conclusion of the quilt show, the quilts were returned to their respective classes and the students voted on where the quilts would go. Some remained in the schools while others were donated to community charities that offer comfort to those in need.
The tremendous success of this project led to a special project in which Katherine worked with three classes at one Burlington and two Oakville schools during 2017 - 2018. One class with Grade 7 students took a break from their quilt making activities to each make a block for several quilts to go to first responders to the Humboldt tragedy.
Thank you for your leadership and willingness to make a difference. I want to thank you for working with our schools and inspiring numbers of our students. I also want to comment on the heartfelt work you have undertaken to support first responders, their families and the victims of that horrific day in Saskatchewan. (Your) group's dedication and empathy in the most difficult circumstances are and will not be lost on those students you have inspired.
