President’s Challenge 2024 -2025
While 9-patch quilts are great, and usually one of the first patterns followed by beginner quilters, the addition of the Sudoku challenge gives the 9-patch an additional twist. Members create a quilt by assembling the fabric so that the requirements of the popular Sudoku puzzle are met. The finished quilts will be featured at the September 2025 meeting.
Halton Quilters Guild Member 2025 Quilt Show Challenge
Using some of three Northcott fabrics provided, plus any other choice of fabrics, members were to create a piece with a perimeter no bigger than 80 in / 200 cm. These were displayed at the “Stitches in Our Time” Quilt Show in May. Photos of the display may be found on page 6 of the June / July Snippets.
President's Challenge 2023 - 2024
A RETURN TO CHILDHOOD CHALLENGE - CONGRATULATIONS to the winners BRENDA MOSS and CHERYL GRIFFIN!
(See page 6 in the June 2024 Snippets.)
Make a quilt, throw size or smaller, using only three colours: white, black and a surprise colour. The surprise colour was selected by picking a crayon out of a bag. Participants were NOT restricted to three fabrics, but rather to just these three colours.

Vice-President's Challenge 2023 - 2024
This challenge was a scrap lover's dream. At each guild meeting participants received a bag of fabric and encouraged to use that fabric in a block or two – could be scrappy or coordinated – their choice. There were suggestions for a 12.5" block in your bag but this design was not required.

President's Challenge 2022 - 2023
UPDATE: Thank you to the everyone who participated in the HQG 45th Anniversary Challenge. There were several unique entries, ranging from quilts to art pieces, each reflecting an original interpretation of the challenge. The winning entry from Katherine Hunter was an accordion display illustrating a variety of quilt blocks, all in beautiful shades of blue.
(See page 8 in the October Snippets.)
Create a quilt with the theme of “Sapphire – Our 45th Anniversary”. Interpret this in any way that inspires you. Deep blue colours, paper pieced sapphire jewels, appliques of blue things found in nature - these are just some possibilities. It’s whatever you and your creativity decide. There is no size requirement or restriction. It can be anything from a miniature quilt to a California King.

THE "STITCHES THROUGH TIME" SCHOOL PROJECT
See the file at the bottom of this page for a more detailed description of the initial year of the "Stitches Through Time" Project.
"Stitches Through Time” was a collaboration between elementary students in the Halton Region and the Halton Quilters Guild in 2016 - 2017. The project was a proposal by guild member, Katherine Hunter, as a way to link the celebration of Canada's 150 birthday with the 40th Anniversary of the guild. The quilts made by the students were then featured as the special exhibit at our 2017 Quilt Show, "Stiches in Our Time".
In September 2016 Katherine visited the interested schools to discuss the history of quilting as well as its importance in the community and as an art form. She then organized a small team of volunteers to work with students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 at Halton schools in Acton, Burlington, Georgetown, Milton and Oakville. The students learned to use a sewing machine, as they sewed a practice strip of material, made a coaster to take home and created a block for their class quilt. Many volunteers from the guild helped with this amazing project - contributing fabric, working with the students in the classroom, assembling the quilt tops, long arm quilting them and then attaching the binding. At the conclusion of the quilt show, the quilts were returned to their respective classes and the students voted on where the quilts would go. Some remained in the schools while others were donated to community charities that offer comfort to those in need.
The tremendous success of this project led to a special project in which Katherine worked with three classes at one Burlington and two Oakville schools during 2017 - 2018. One class with Grade 7 students took a break from their quilt making activities to each make a block for several quilts to go to first responders to the Humboldt tragedy.
Thank you for your leadership and willingness to make a difference. I want to thank you for working with our schools and inspiring numbers of our students. I also want to comment on the heartfelt work you have undertaken to support first responders, their families and the victims of that horrific day in Saskatchewan. (Your) group's dedication and empathy in the most difficult circumstances are and will not be lost on those students you have inspired.
