January 2023 UPDATE: We are once again meeting in person at the Mainway Arena in Burlington, with the occasional meeting offered via Zoom when the guest speaker is from out of the area.
As recently announced, the 2022-23 Halton Quilters Guild meetings will be in a hybrid format, both in person and via Zoom. Our first meeting of the new guild year was held on THURSDAY, September 8, 2022.
*Please note that, due to the long weekend, this will be on the second Thursday of September.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From September to June the Halton Quilters Guild meets on the first Thursday* of each month at the Mainway Arena and Recreation Centre (Auditorium), 4015 Mainway Drive, Burlington, Ontario (*unless otherwise indicated).
The auditorium doors open at 6:30 p.m. After signing in at the Membership table, guild members and guests may choose to sign up for workshops, borrow books from the library, buy tickets for the 50/50 draw, hand in the Block of the Month, check brochures and information on up-coming events at the front table, get a drink and snack or simply take some time to chat and get to know others who share a love of quilting.
The meeting begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. when the President calls the meeting to order. When there is a speaker for the evening, it is expected that the presentation will likely last for approximately an hour. After a short break for refreshments and such, items of business will be covered - committee reports, up-coming guild events and any business requiring membership approval or a vote. The 50/50 and door prize draws take place during this portion of the meeting. The meeting usually finishes by 9:00 p.m.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES as set out in the Constitution:
1. To enhance the knowledge of quilting amongst the members and the community
2. To preserve quilting as an art form
3. To establish, maintain and upgrade quilting standards
4. To encourage an exchange of ideas and methods
5. To participate in community projects

Membership fees for the 2022/2023 guild year remain at $40.00.
Our membership now numbers 121 members!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fall 2020: The Executive have agreed to extend all existing memberships until such time as we are once again able to hold meetings. This will certainly be welcome news to all our members.
Remember that your Membership Card may be honoured at many local quilt shops so continue to check when purchasing supplies for your next quilting project.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guild membership dues entitle you to attend our monthly meetings which are held at the Mainway Arena (Auditorium) in Burlington. These meetings feature guest speakers, informative programmes and special guild activities. These activities include opportunities to participate in a President's Challenge and Block of the Month quilt projects as well as take part in a special Outreach Day in February, making "comfort" quilts to be donated to members of our community.
At monthly meetings members may choose to showcase what they have made during "Sew and Share", often adding personal and humourous anecdotes which make this one of the highlights of the evening. Our guild also has an excellent library of books and magazines which are made available to members to borrow. Members are kept informed of guild activities and upcoming events through a monthly newsletter, Snippets as well as the Halton Quilters Guild website.
Guild membership runs from July 1st to June 30th of the following year. Members are encouraged to renew by the end of June, and those who do so have their names entered into an "Early Bird" draw for a free membership for the subsequent year. This membership draw is made at the September meeting.
NEW! To reduce our paper waste, returning members simply check the information from the previous year, and then initial, date and pay for the current year's membership. New members will be able to pick up a form at the Membership table. Membership cards will be available for pick up at the guild meeting in the month following renewal.

Rosemary Makhan, the founder and first President of the Halton Quilters Guild, was a very talented lady who loved to share her passion of quilting with quilters locally and internationally. Many of our members obtained their first experience of quilting from Rosemary’s classes. The special exhibit at the HQG Quilt Show in 2015 honoured her memory with "Quilts by Rosemary Makhan - a Tribute", as we were saddened to lose Rosemary suddenly in 2014.
BANNER - The "Guild Logo" banner was designed by guild member, Maureen Barber, in 1980 - 1981.
MEETINGS - The first meeting of our guild was held at Queen Elizabeth Park School in Oakville on October 20, 1977. The membership numbered 25! At the next meeting in November, the membership decided on our name, the Halton Quilters Guild, with a membership fee of $5.00.
LIBRARY - When our guild was formed, there was ONE magazine, “Quilters Newsletter”, and ONE book,' "The Standard Book of Quilt Making", written by Marguerite Ickis and owned by Rosemary Makhan! Today the library has approximately 750 books and magazines available to inspire our creativity … how the numbers have grown!
NEWSLETTERS - Since August 1978, newsletters have been part of our guild's history. Originally known as the "Halton Highlights", a contest in 1998 resulted in the new name of "Snippets" as suggested by Joan Raynor, former HQG President.
OUTREACH - Giving comfort to others in the community is a long-time tradition for quilt guilds. Our cuddle quilt project was inspired by a member's concern for the families seeking shelter at the Halton Women's Place. The first donation of 12 cuddle quilts was then presented during the 1988 - 1989 guild year. Since then, our guild members have made and donated cuddle quilts by the hundreds to different organizations in Halton which help those in need!
QUILT SHOWS - Halton Quilters Guild’s FIRST quilt show was held at the Granary in Oakville in April 1979 with shows continuing to be a yearly event for the next 15 years. Our 15th Annual Quilt Show was held in April 1993, and the admission fee was $3.00. In 2017 the Halton Quilters Guild held its 27th Quilt Show!
In November 1992 there was a motion put forth to the membership to hold quilt shows every other year, and the motion was carried. In 2018 members voted to hold the quilt show every four years.
